Datalogic QuickScan QW2520 - Versatile 2D scanning

The Datalogic QuickScan QW2520 is a wired 2D scanner with a VGA sensor designed to provide practical barcode scanning for everyday professional tasks. It is part of the QuickScan 2500 series and combines omnidirectional reading, Green Spot technology, Motionix motion detection and USB connectivity.

This black version is supplied as a kit including a 90A052258 USB cable and an STD-QW25-BK stand. It is particularly suitable for retail outlets and other locations where it is necessary to scan both traditional barcodes and 2D codes, as well as codes displayed on mobile devices.

VGA sensor for omnidirectional 1D and 2D scanning

The QuickScan QW2520 uses a 640 × 480-pixel VGA image sensor. This distinguishes it from the QD, QM and QBT models in the QuickScan 2500 series, which use a 1-megapixel sensor. The QW’s VGA configuration is designed to offer essential 2D scanning capabilities whilst maintaining a more convenient positioning.

Scanning is omnidirectional: it is therefore not necessary to align the barcode in a specific orientation before scanning. This feature simplifies repetitive tasks and is particularly useful at checkouts.

Compatible with numerous 1D and 2D symbologies

The QW2520 automatically recognises the main 1D barcodes, including GS1 DataBar linear codes. For 2D codes, it supports Aztec Code, China Han Xin Code, Data Matrix, MaxiCode, Micro QR Code, QR Code and DotCode.

Compatibility also extends to various postal, stacked and composite codes, including PDF417, MicroPDF417, MacroPDF, GS1 DataBar Stacked, GS1 DataBar Expanded Stacked and composite EAN/JAN and UPC symbologies. The Digimarc Digital Watermark and OCR functions listed in the datasheet are, however, exclusive to the QD2500, QM2500 and QBT2500 models and are not available on the QW2520.

Scanning codes from smartphones and through plexiglass

The QuickScan 2500 series has also been developed to meet the modern demands of the point of sale, where it is increasingly common to scan electronic vouchers, loyalty cards and other codes displayed on a smartphone screen.

The system is also designed to facilitate scanning through plexiglass barriers and to handle barcodes that are difficult to scan, poorly printed or damaged. These capabilities extend its use in service and checkout areas.

Intuitive aiming and comfortable illumination

The QW model uses a blue dot as an aiming aid, based on a 468 nm LED emission. This reference helps the operator to immediately identify the area towards which the scanner is pointing.

The illumination, on the other hand, uses a 617 nm red LED. The soft light is designed to minimise visual fatigue for the operator during repetitive scanning tasks.

Green Spot for immediate confirmation

The patented Datalogic Green Spot technology provides visual confirmation directly on the barcode when a scan is successfully completed. The system allows the operator to quickly verify the scan without relying solely on audible feedback.

The QW2520 also features a good-read LED and an audible signal with adjustable pitch, offering multiple confirmation methods during daily use.

Motionix for smoother operational transitions

The patented Motionix technology detects the movement of the device and is designed to make transitions between scanning modes smoother. This system helps to make interaction with the scanner more natural during repetitive tasks.

When used with the STD-QW25-BK mount included in the kit, the scanner can be neatly integrated into the workstation and kept easily accessible to the operator.

Resolution of up to 3 mil on linear barcodes

Despite using a VGA sensor, the QW2520 achieves a maximum resolution of 0.077 mm, equivalent to 3 mil, on linear 1D codes. For PDF417, the maximum resolution is 0.127 mm or 5 mil, whilst for Data Matrix it reaches 0.152 mm or 6 mil.

For QR Codes, the maximum stated resolution is 0.17 mm, equivalent to 6.7 mil. The minimum print contrast ratio can reach 15 per cent with a specific configuration.

Depth of field suitable for everyday tasks

The depth of field varies depending on the symbology, print resolution, contrast and ambient light. With 5 mil Code 39, the QW2520 offers a typical range of between 0.5 and 23 cm, whilst with 10 mil Code 39 it reaches 37 cm.

For 13 mil EAN/UPC-A, the range extends up to 40 cm. The typical depth of field is 15.5 cm with 10 mil Data Matrix, 13.5 cm with 6.7 mil PDF417 and 33 cm with 20 mil QR Code.

Wired USB without battery management

The QW2520 is a USB-only, wired model. The series documentation indicates support for USB Type-C and USB, distinguishing it from the QD2590, which adds RS-232 thanks to its multi-interface configuration.

It does not feature Bluetooth, STAR radio or a battery, features included in other cordless variants of the series. This configuration is therefore suitable for workstations where a stable wired connection is preferred, without the need to recharge the scanner.

IP52 rating and resistance to drops from 1.5 metres

The design is tailored to the demands of professional use. The QW2520 offers IP52 sealing and withstands repeated drops from 1.5 m onto a concrete surface.

The stated operating life is 10 million, whilst ESD protection is rated at 16 kV for air discharges. The device can also operate in ambient light levels ranging from 0 to 100,000 lux.
