Datalogic Gryphon I GD4220 - Advanced 1D scanning for professional workstations

The Datalogic Gryphon I GD4220 is a wired 1D linear imager scanner designed for professional applications requiring high-performance scanning, ergonomics and reliability. Part of the premium Gryphon 4200 range, it combines a solid-state CCD sensor with dedicated Datalogic technologies to facilitate barcode capture in day-to-day operations.

This configuration is the USB-only version in black and is supplied as a kit with the 90A052258 USB cable. It does not feature wireless communication: it is designed for fixed workstations where a wired connection ensures operational continuity without the need to manage batteries or recharging.

Enhanced Linear Imaging for challenging 1D barcodes

The Enhanced Linear Imaging technology is designed to deliver high performance and a wide depth of field. The GD4220 can scan both high-density and low-resolution 1D codes and handles difficult-to-read, poorly printed or damaged barcodes.

The scanner automatically recognises the main standard 1D barcodes, including GS1 DataBar linear codes. It is also designed to scan barcodes displayed on mobile devices, a useful feature in applications where digital codes are presented directly on a screen.

400 scans per second and a resolution of up to 3 mil

The solid-state CCD sensor achieves a maximum processing speed of 1,000,000 pixels per second, equivalent to 400 scans per second. This capability ensures smooth scanning at workstations where frequent scanning takes place.

The maximum resolution is 0.077 mm, equivalent to 3 mil, whilst the minimum required print contrast ratio is 15 per cent. Illumination is provided by a dual LED array with a wavelength ranging from 612 to 630 nm.

Wide depth of field up to 147 cm

The GD4220 allows barcodes to be scanned from different distances depending on the symbology and its density. With 5 mil Code 39, the typical range is between 5 and 37 cm, whilst with 10 mil Code 39 it extends from 5 to 73.5 cm.

With a 20 mil Code 39, the distance can reach 147 cm, whilst for 13 mil EAN/UPC the typical range is between 3.5 and 90 cm. Actual reading distances also depend on the length of the symbol, the scan angle, print quality, contrast and ambient light.

Green Spot and 3GL for effective visual confirmation

The Datalogic Green Spot technology projects a visual confirmation directly onto the code when a successful read is completed. It is particularly useful in noisy or low-light environments, where relying solely on an audible signal may be less practical.

The 3GL (Three Green Lights) system combines the Green Spot with two ‘good read’ LEDs. These indicators are complemented by an audible signal with an adjustable pitch, providing the operator with multiple forms of feedback to immediately verify the scan result.

Motionix and Soft Line Viewfinder for intuitive use

Motionix technology detects the scanner’s movement and allows the device to automatically switch to read-ready mode. This system facilitates operational transitions and makes interaction with the scanner more natural during repetitive tasks.

The GD4220 also utilises Datalogic’s distinctive Soft Line Viewfinder, designed to help the operator locate and aim at the barcode to be scanned more easily.

Good positioning flexibility during scanning

The reading angles allow barcodes to be scanned even without keeping the scanner perfectly aligned. The GD4220 supports a tilt of ±65°, a rotation of ±45° and a lateral orientation of ±65°.

This tolerance simplifies manual use in day-to-day operations, particularly when the label cannot be positioned directly in front of the scanner.

Wired USB connection for a fixed workstation

The GD4220 is the USB-only variant of the Gryphon 4200 wired range. According to Datalogic’s documentation, it supports USB Type-C and USB, whilst the GD4290 is the model in the same family designed for installations that also require RS-232.

This specific configuration is supplied with the USB cable 90A052258. The GD4220 requires a power supply of 5 VDC ±5 per cent, with a typical operating current of less than 350 mA at 5 V and a standby current of less than 60 mA at 5 V.

IP52 rating and resistance to drops from 1.8 metres

The Gryphon I GD4220 is designed to withstand daily professional use. The housing offers an IP52 protection rating and withstands repeated drops from 1.8 m onto a concrete surface.

Protection against electrostatic discharge reaches 16 kV in air. The scanner can also operate in ambient light levels ranging from 0 to 130,000 lux, a feature that facilitates use in environments with varying lighting conditions.

Disinfectant-Ready housing for regular cleaning

The Gryphon 4200 series features a Disinfectant-Ready housing, designed to withstand daily cleaning with harsh disinfectant solutions commonly used in healthcare settings.

This feature is particularly useful in laboratories and pharmacies and, more generally, in shared workstations where scanners and peripherals need to be cleaned regularly.
