Datalogic Gryphon GD4290 - Advanced performance for professional 1D scanning

The Datalogic Gryphon GD4290 is a wired 1D linear imager scanner from the Gryphon 4200 professional range. Designed for value-added applications, it combines high-performance scanning, ergonomic design and multi-interface connectivity, facilitating its integration into a variety of professional workstations.

Enhanced Linear Imaging technology enables the capture of high-density, low-resolution 1D codes, as well as hard-to-read, poorly printed or damaged barcodes. The device is also designed to read codes displayed on mobile device screens, expanding its potential applications in retail, services, healthcare and access control.

Enhanced Linear Imaging for hard-to-read codes

The Gryphon GD4290 utilises a solid-state CCD sensor and optimised Linear Imaging technology to offer a high depth of field. This configuration enables it to handle both high-density codes and larger, lower-resolution barcodes.

The scanner automatically recognises the main standard 1D barcodes, including GS1 DataBar linear codes. The maximum resolution reaches 0.077 mm, equivalent to 3 mil, whilst the minimum required print contrast ratio is 15 per cent.

400 scans per second for rapid capture

The scanning system achieves a maximum speed of 1,000,000 pixels per second, equivalent to 400 scans per second. This performance enables barcodes to be captured quickly in environments characterised by frequent and repetitive operations.

The lighting utilises a dual LED array operating at 612–630 nm. The reading angles reach ±65° in tilt, ±45° in rotation and ±65° laterally, offering the operator considerable freedom in positioning the scanner relative to the code.

Green Spot and 3GL for immediate read confirmation

The Gryphon GD4290 features the distinctive Datalogic Green Spot, which provides visual confirmation directly on the barcode following a successful scan. The 3GL (Three Green Lights) system combines the Green Spot with two ‘good read’ LEDs to ensure the feedback is easily identifiable.

There is also an audible signal with adjustable pitch. The combination of visual and audible feedback is particularly useful in noisy or dimly lit environments, where a single confirmation method might be less effective.

Motionix for a more natural user experience

The Datalogic Motionix technology detects the scanner’s movements and automatically switches to read-ready mode. This allows the device to adapt to the operator’s actions without requiring constant manual intervention.

When the scanner is ready to scan, the system also activates the distinctive Soft Line Viewfinder, designed to make it easier to aim at the barcode. The aim is to make scanning more intuitive during day-to-day tasks and to reduce the time needed to align the scanner.

Wide depth of field up to 147 cm

The depth of field varies depending on the symbology, the size of the code, the print contrast and environmental conditions. With 5 mil Code 39, the typical range is between 5 and 37 cm, whilst with 10 mil Code 39 it ranges from 5 to 73.5 cm.

With larger barcodes, the range increases further: a 20 mil Code 39 can be scanned from up to 147 cm. For 13-mil EAN/UPC, the typical reading range is between 3.5 and 90 cm. This flexibility allows the same scanner to be used with barcodes of different sizes and at different distances.

Multi-interface USB-C, USB and RS-232

A distinctive feature of the GD4290 compared to the GD4220 is its multi-interface connectivity. The GD4290 supports USB Type-C, USB and RS-232, allowing the scanner to be adapted to different infrastructures and host devices.

This versatility makes the model particularly attractive for B2B installations where it may be necessary to maintain compatibility with existing systems or to configure the workstation for different connection methods.

IP52-rated construction, resistant to drops from 1.8 metres

The Gryphon GD4290 is designed to withstand the rigours of daily professional use. The construction withstands repeated drops from 1.8 m onto concrete and offers ESD protection up to 16 kV in air.

The IP52 rating provides protection against the ingress of particles and water in accordance with the level specified by the classification. The scanner can operate at temperatures between 0 °C and 50 °C and supports relative humidity of up to 95 per cent, non-condensing.

Disinfectant-Ready housing for frequent cleaning

The Gryphon 4200 series utilises Disinfectant-Ready enclosures, designed to withstand daily cleaning with harsh disinfectant solutions commonly used in healthcare settings.

This feature makes the GD4290 particularly suitable for laboratories and pharmacies, but it also offers an advantage in other shared environments where scanners and peripherals are used by multiple operators and require frequent cleaning.
