Zebra DS4608 SR - Versatile 2D scanning for high-volume retail environments

The Zebra DS4608 SR is a Standard Range wired 1D/2D scanner designed for data capture at points of sale and in professional environments. It combines a high-resolution sensor with an ergonomic design that allows you to switch between handheld and presentation scanning.

This configuration is supplied in black with a shielded USB cable and an Intellistand mount. The kit therefore enables you to set up a complete workstation, using the scanner handheld or in hands-free mode when placed on the stand.

1280 × 800-pixel sensor for 1D and 2D barcodes

The imaging system uses a 1280 × 800-pixel sensor with a nominal field of view of 36.1° horizontally and 22.6° vertically. Area Imager technology allows barcodes to be scanned from different orientations without requiring precise alignment of the code.

The platform is designed to read 1D and 2D codes, making it suitable for products, labels, coupons and other media used in retail and professional workflows.

Standard Range for day-to-day operations

The minimum specified print contrast ratio is 15 per cent. Reading angles reach ±60° for Pitch, ±60° for Skew and 360° for Roll, offering flexibility in positioning the scanner relative to the barcode.

The Zebra DS4608 SR uses various indicators to inform the operator of the scan status. The system includes a Direct Decode Indicator, a ‘good read’ LED, rear LEDs and an audible alert with adjustable tone and volume.

Immediate confirmation allows users to quickly verify that the barcode has been captured, a particularly useful advantage in workstations characterised by a high number of scans throughout the day.

Manual mode and presentation scanning

In presentation mode, the operator can bring the item or barcode directly up to the scanner. This flexibility allows the workstation to be adapted to the size of the items and the various tasks carried out at the till.

Wired USB connection

The DS4608-SR7U2100SGW configuration is a wired USB kit. The scanner comes with a shielded USB cable and can be connected directly to the host system.

Zebra’s documentation indicates support for various USB modes, including USB HID Keyboard, IBM Hand-Held USB, OPOS and SNAPI with imaging. The device automatically detects the host interface type and uses the default configuration where appropriate.

Image capture

In addition to barcode scanning, the Zebra DS4608 SR supports image export. Supported image formats include Bitmap, JPEG and TIFF.

This feature expands data capture capabilities in professional applications that require visual information in addition to standard barcode decoding.

IP52 protection and drop resistance

The DS4608 SR is designed to withstand daily use in professional environments. The device features an IP52 rating, helping to protect it from dust ingress and splashes.

Zebra’s technical documentation also states that the device is designed to withstand repeated drops from 1.8 m onto concrete, an important feature in work environments where the scanner is frequently picked up and put down.
