Datalogic Magellan 900i - Compact omnidirectional 2D scanning for POS and services

The Datalogic Magellan 900i is a presentation-style omnidirectional 2D scanner designed for points of sale, service counters and self-service applications. Digital imaging technology enables the rapid capture of 1D and 2D codes from both printed media and those displayed on smartphone, tablet and laptop screens.

This black version includes an adjustable stand and a 2-metre USB keyboard cable. The compact design allows the scanner to be used on the counter in presentation mode or held in the hand when the operator needs to bring the scanner closer to the code.

1 MP sensor for 1D and 2D codes

The Magellan 900i features a 1-megapixel image capture system with a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels. Omnidirectional technology enables barcodes to be scanned from different orientations, simplifying repetitive tasks at the till and on the counter.

The scanner automatically recognises all major 1D linear codes, including GS1 DataBar, and supports 2D symbologies such as Aztec, DataMatrix, MaxiCode and QR Code.

Scans postal codes, stacked codes and composite codes

Compatibility extends to numerous postal codes used internationally, including Australian Post, British Post, Canadian Post, China Post, Japanese Post, Portuguese Post, Swedish Post, IMB, KIX, Planet, Postnet and Royal Mail.

For stacked symbologies, MicroPDF417, PDF417 and various GS1 DataBar variants are supported, including Composite, Expanded Stacked, Stacked and Stacked Omnidirectional.

Scans barcodes directly from screens

An important feature for modern retail is the ability to read codes displayed on smartphones, laptops and tablets. This enables the handling of electronic coupons, digital loyalty cards, vouchers, tickets and boarding passes without necessarily requiring a printed copy.

The combination of digital imaging and omnidirectional scanning makes the Magellan 900i suitable for both traditional checkout operations and workflows based on digital content.

1280 × 800-pixel image capture

In addition to barcode decoding, the scanner supports image capture. Images can be captured at a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels in JPEG and BMP formats.

LED pointer for precise scanning

The Magellan 900i features an LED pointer that helps the operator to precisely select the desired code. It is particularly useful when there are several barcodes in close proximity, such as on code lists or small items.

The adaptive lighting is designed to improve operator comfort during frequent scanning sessions.

Green Spot to confirm a successful read

Datalogic Green Spot technology provides immediate visual feedback when the code has been successfully captured. This confirmation is complemented by a ‘good read’ LED and an audible alert with adjustable tone and volume.

The combination of visual and audible signals allows the operator to receive clear confirmation without interrupting the normal workflow.

Depth of field up to 28 cm

The depth of field varies depending on the print resolution, symbol size, scan angle, contrast and lighting conditions. For 5-mil linear barcodes, the specified range is from 2.5 to 11 cm.

With 10 mil 1D barcodes, it reaches 18 cm; with 13 mil UPCs, it reaches 21 cm; and with 20 mil codes, it reaches 28 cm. For 15-mil DataMatrix codes, the stated reading range extends up to 19 cm.

Adjustable stand for presentation mode scanning

The included adjustable stand allows the scanner to be placed on the counter and used in presentation mode. The operator can therefore bring products, vouchers or mobile devices directly up to the scanner.

The design also allows the scanner to be held in the hand when necessary, offering a flexible configuration for retail outlets and service counters with different operational requirements.

USB Keyboard connection with a 2-metre cable

This configuration is supplied with a 2-metre USB Keyboard cable, enabling a wired connection to the host system. The technical documentation for the Magellan 900i range also indicates support for USB Keyboard, USB COM, USB OEM (IBM) and RS-232 interfaces.

The product is therefore a wired scanner and does not require batteries or charging systems for normal operation.

IP52 protection for professional use

The Magellan 900i offers an IP52 rating of protection against dust and water and can withstand repeated drops from 1.2 m onto a concrete surface.

Protection against electrostatic discharge in air is rated at 25 kV. The device can operate in relative humidity ranging from 5% to 95%, provided there is no condensation.

Operation in ambient light levels up to 86,100 lux

The scanner is designed to operate in ambient light levels ranging from 0 to 86,100 lux. The operating temperature ranges from 0 °C to 40 °C, whilst the temperature range for storage and transport is between -40 °C and 70 °C.

The required power supply is 5 VDC ±10%. Typical power consumption during operation is less than 300 mA, whilst in standby mode it drops below 170 mA.
