Hello Brian, 

For car trips these kind of radios are not ideal as they have a short range and if you´re in a car, the chassis and body will absorb that signal preventing it from being transmitted. 

For a better performance I´d suggest a LIcensed Radio (license costs £75.00  and the application is in the box) such as the Mitex General and a Mag antenna,
