Unlimited communication with license-free PMR446 walkie-talkies!

What is a license-free two-way radio?

The PMR446 or PMR radio is a license-free walkie-talkie that gives you completely free and unlimited communication. Quite literally, the name refers to being able to "talk while walking", and the device uses radio waves to carry voice messages.

Unlike licensed devices, which require their users to pay an annual fee to OFCOM (The UK Office of Communications), the license-free walkie-talkie only needs to be set to the PMR446 radio channel, providing you with completely free communications. Depending on the model of a walkie-talkie, PMR radio offers users between 8 to 16 different channels in the 446 MHz frequency range.

What is the range of a license-free walkie-talkie?

Put simply, this type of device will allow you to communicate with all of your collaborators via walkie-talkies set to the same channel, with a range of up to 5 to 12 kilometers in open space. Its range will vary depending on various factors, such as weather conditions, the town or office building, depending on what you are using it for.

With good weather conditions, if you are at height and there are no obstacles, you will be able to hear and be heard perfectly at a considerable range. However, your range will be reduced in the case of wind or fog, or if you are in a forest or a building with thick walls.

What is the best license-free walkie-talkie?

The license-free walkie-talkie can be used as part of hobbies, such as hiking, hunting, and climbing, as well as in working environments, such as construction sites, warehouses, stadiums, restaurants, or for events and security. PMR446 radios are a helpful tool for all different types of work! Even though communication is free, this type of walkie-talkie is nevertheless a professional device that will fulfill working professionals’ communication needs.

What features should I be looking for in a license-free two-way radio?

Our devices offer many benefits which are particularly useful for professionals working in challenging or extreme conditions:

  • Robust protection: they have been designed to withstand harsh conditions which could otherwise diminish their product lifespan. They can survive different types of shocks and drops, and they can function in challenging climates, from extreme cold to extreme heat as well as humidity. PMR446 radio also has protection against water and dust. Depending on the device, they can withstand raindrops, splashes of water, strong sprays, and even temporary or extended immersion in water.
  • You can easily find out the level of waterproofing a device offers by checking its IP (Ingress Protection) rating, which is composed of two digits. The first digit refers to the level of protection against dust, and the second digit refers to waterproofing. The higher the number, the more protected the device will be against dust and water. For more information, please check out our guide to Ingress Protection ratings.
  • They are more convenient than a phone: if you have a job that involves a degree of risk, such as working in the fire service, the military, or in security, you know that every minute counts. With a walkie-talkie, you do not need to dial a number to call one of your colleagues, you can get in contact instantly, simply by pressing a button.
  • Also, unlike a smartphone, you can talk to several people at the same time, which is a considerable benefit if you work as part of a team. To start communicating, all you have to do is press the PTT (Push To Talk) button.
  • Some devices are even equipped with the iVox function, which means you do not even need to press a button to communicate. The PMR radio will automatically start to transmit communications to your colleagues as soon as you start to talk in the direction of the device.
  • Long-lasting battery life: depending on your workplace and whether you work outside, it can be difficult to find the time to charge your device. Our PMR446 radio offers long-lasting battery life which will withstand intensive all-day use without you needing to recharge its battery. For example, the Motorola Extreme T82 can last up to 18 hours without charging.

Not just for work: walkie-talkies aren’t just for work. Motorola’s TLKR range is perfect for outdoor activities, such as hiking, cycling, camping, and even fishing. With our pack, you can keep your devices charged during long walks.

In conclusion, walkie-talkies are easy to use, are more reliable than smartphones, offer a long battery life, and are perfect for a wide variety of outdoor activities. What more could you want? With our affordable radios, you’ll be able to enjoy all of these benefits for yourself.
